Ohio Issue 1: Vote No - August 2023 Special Election

Ohio is a partially open primary state, which means the State considers me to be whatever previous political party I requested a partisan primary ballot for. I'm only bringing this up because they still think I'm a Republican and want me to work this election (that they previously had to get rid of because it was "bad")

I personally believe we should be advocating for...

  • Non-Partisan Primaries
  • Bi-Partisan Redistricting Committees
  • Rank-Choice (or similar) Voting

But getting to the point - regardless of your party affiliation - on Tuesday, August 8th, 2023 the State of Ohio is holding a Special Election.

Please vote. And please encourage others around you to vote as well.

State Issue 1 Ballot Explanation:

Issue 1 asks eligible Ohio voters to consider an amendment to the Constitution of the State of Ohio proposed by a two-thirds majority of the Ohio General Assembly. The amendment, if approved, would elevate the standards by which the Constitution of the State of Ohio may be amended. Any newly proposed constitutional amendment placed on a statewide ballot must receive at least 60 percent of the vote to be approved. Any initiated petition proposing to amend the Constitution of the State of Ohio that is filed with the Secretary of State on or after January 1, 2024 must contain the signatures of at least five percent of the eligible voters residing in each county of the state. Finally, the amendment specifies that new signatures may not be added to an initiative petition proposing to amend the Constitution of the State of Ohio once it has been filed with the Secretary of State on or after January 1, 2024 .

Ostensibly, this makes it harder for citizen-led constitutional amendments to make it in front of voters. I think all Ohio citizens should vote NO on Issue 1.

Remember how we came together on Ohio Issue 1 in 2015 and voted overwhelmingly to have a bipartisan redistricting committee (71.47% in favor) but the same lawmakers proposing this change have completely ignored that we voted that way in the first place?

These Ohio lawmakers are STILL not acting in good faith so you should not believe they are recommending this change for our benefit. This is a direct attack on access to abortion being added through a citizen-led constitutional amendment and a last-ditch effort to stop it.

What are you afraid of? When you left the decisions to the states, did you not actually mean that?

You don't actually care what 50% of us say?

Or 71.47% of us, either.

But we are expected to believe that 60% is the right number. Got it.

Vote NO on Ohio Issue 1 on August 8th, 2023.
